downtown, uptown

在美国英语里经常使用downtown以及uptown来表示城市的区域。

●down一般指城市的中心以及周边。尤其指的是办公区和商业街；Let’s take a taxi downtown.

●uptown一般指离城市的中心比较远的住宅区域：

They live an old uptown neighborhood.虽然在英国英语中没有完全和downtown意思相符的词，但是city/town centre和其意思比较接近。和uptown意思比较接近的英国英语有the outskirts 或the suburbs:

They live in an old neighbourhood on the outskirts/in the suburbs.

Getting Directions on the Phone  打电话给客户指路

C=Carolyn Smith  B= Bruce brogden

C: Hollo.Carolyn Smith speaking.but I can’t find the directions to your office. Can you give me them again?

  你好， 我是卡罗琳.史密斯。

B: Hello, Carolyn. This is Bruce Brogden. I’m sorry. but I can’t find the directions to your office. Can you give me them again?

  你好，卡罗琳。我是布鲁斯.布罗格登。对不起，我找不到去你办公室的路了，你能再告诉我一趟吗？

C: No problem. Where are you now?

  没问题，你现在在哪里？

B: I’m downtown…at the corner of Fourth Street and Washington Avenue.

  我在市中心，在第四大街和华盛顿路的街角。

C: OK. Go down Washington Avenueuntil you get to the ABC building/

  好的，沿着华盛顿路一起走到ABC大楼。

B: Do I walk past the ABC building?

  我要走过ABC大楼吗？

 

为了让对方知道接电话的人是谁，我们一般会说自己的名字+ speaking。

在语气比较随便的对话中想说“很高兴你让我帮忙办事”，可以用no problem.

在美国英语中，人们说downtown而不说I’m in the town centre.或者I’m in the centre of the town.

“拐角”既可以说at the corner,也可以说on the corner.

在英国英语中，人们用go straight on 来代替go straight.
