In your e-mail; of June 7 you asked about American business customs. I am happy to answer your questions and give you some advice to help you prepare for your first trip to the United States.
•American men and women hsake hands when they are introduced on business occasions.
•U.S. busness meetings usually begin exactly on time. A 10:00 Am appointment means you should arrive exactlyat, or a few minutes before 10:00 AM.
• Business meetings over lunch are common. They usually start at about 12:30 and end by 2:00.
•Don’t be surprised if you get an invitation to breakfast. It is a popular time for business get- togethers.

A: Ken, you’ve spent some time in the Us. Havent you? 肯,你曾经在美国待过一段时间,是吗?
在语气比较随便的对话中人们会把the United States of America简单说成the States.
 
Yes
K:Yes, I was in the States for a year. 是的,我在美国待过一年。
A:Well, I’m going to New York on business next month, and I was hopeing you could give me some advice.
我下个月要去纽约出差,希望你能给我一些建议。
除了可以说I was hoping you could give me some advice之外我们还可以问Can you give me some advice?
K: Sure. What do you want to know? 好的,你想知道些什么呢?
A:What about business clothe? 商务场合的着装怎么样?
K: Well, a lot of American companies have a business casual dress code.许多美国公司都有商务休闲装的着装规则。
A:What do you mean, business casual?你说“商务休闲装”是什么意思?
如果你有什么事情不明白或者对方刚说的话表示吃惊,可以说What do you mean?
K: For men, it usually means you should wear a shirt shoes, but no jeans, sandals, trainers or while socks.对于男人来讲,商务休闲装的意思就是你应该穿带领带的衬衫、系皮带的裤子裤子和皮鞋,但是不能穿牛仔裤、凉鞋、运动鞋或白袜子。
在美国英语里人们不说trainers而说sneakers.
A: What about a suit?穿套装怎么样?
K: Well, some American executives wear a suilt to work, so take one with you,just in case. And whatever you do, be sure to take lightweight colthes. It can be very hot and humid on New York at this time of the year.
  一些美国业务主管会穿套装去上班,所以,你可以带一套以防万一。不管你带什么,你都要带比较轻薄的衣服。每年这个时候纽约的气候既热又潮湿。
(just) in case这个意思用于表示“以防万一“。
在对话中,当你想要警告对方或者是给对方提出忠告可以、不可以干某事的时候,你可以使用whatever you do.来强调
你说话的内容。
